Bruno Fernandes gave a subtle hint about Cristiano Ronaldo‘s Manchester United future following the 2-1 win against Liverpool.

The 37-year-old was dropped to the bench by Erik ten Hag for the clash against the Red Devils’ bitter rivals.

With the former Ajax manager wanting more energy and pressing in the attacking areas, the 52-year-old brought Anthony Elanga into the side in place of United’s number seven.

With nine days of the summer transfer window remaining, the five-time Ballon D’or winner’s future remains up in the air.

The Portugal national team captain wants to join a Champions League club, but while his agent Jorge Mendes has been hard at work trying to engineer interest from top sides, none have been forthcoming.

Following his return to Old Trafford from Juventus at the end of August last year, Ronaldo was United’s top scorer with 24 goals in all competitions.

But with Ten Hag keen to adopt an intense and pressing philosophy, Ronaldo found himself taking the watching brief as his side contested against last season’s League Cup and FA Cup winners.

Fernandes, who captained United last night with Harry Maguire also dropped to the bench, didn’t want to give too much away when asked about the future of his legendary compatriot.

Speaking to Talksport, United’s number eight said: “There is a lot of speculation. I may know one thing or another, but I won’t be the one who will say it.

“For now he is a United player, I don’t know about his future, if he will leave or if he will not leave.

“As he said, he will speak soon and they will have time to hear his words and what he has to say.

“He can continue at a high level and give us a lot of goals but it’s his decision.

“We have to respect what he wants to do, whatever he wants to do.

“If he’s going to stay, we’ll be happy about it, if he’s going to leave because he thinks it’s best for him, I’ll be personally happy for him.”

Last week, Ronaldo insisted he will set the record straight with his own version of events when the time is right, and that could come before or after the transfer window closes.

The big question will be whether Cristiano Ronaldo is a Manchester United player when he reveals all. Following last night’s cameo against Liverpool, there is a chance that one of the game’s all-time greats has potentially played his last match at Old Trafford.
