Why JJ Gabriel can’t play for Man Utd despite under-18s heroics

Manchester United’s academy has a new superstar on the rise, and he’s yet to even have his 15th birthday.

No matter how talented a youngster is, it is not until they start doing it for the U18s that we can really begin to judge.

This was the case with Bendito Mantato, who was an instant superstar for the U18s last season, while Amir Ibragimov enjoyed an excellent first regular season in the higher age groups.

Manchester United have a proven route for youngsters to go from academy to first-team, which is the reason there is such an interest around youth football at the club. Therefore, fans are always looking for the next super-talented wonderkid to step up, and JJ Gabriel is doing everything to make sure it is him.

The 14-year-old has long been known for his ability and was fast-tracked to U18 football last season in a bid to convince him to remain at the club long-term. This plan worked, with Gabriel recently committing his short-term future to United with a two-year deal signed.

This has led some to wonder if he should be considered for a debut under Ruben Amorim.

JJ Gabriel is unable to make his Manchester United debut this season

It was only in April that Gabriel made his U18 debut with two goals off the bench, announcing himself as the highest potential talent currently at Carrington.

This only heightened the need to secure the teenager’s future with a contract, and after signing, Gabriel was spotted in a first-team training kit ahead of pre-season.

However, this won’t result in a senior Premier League debut, in the 2025-26 season due to regulations. Gabriel is too young to make his professional debut in the Premier League according to the league’s rules on minimum age requirements to play.

A player must have turned 15 years old by August 2025 in order to be eligible to make a Premier League debut in the 2025-26 season, which Gabriel will not be. Gabriel turns 15th in October 2025, and so the earliest he will be eligible to make his debut for United in the league at least is the 2026/27 season.

If he were able to play, United could have broken records with Gabriel by making him the youngest ever in the competition. This would show Gabriel and his father that his future is best served at Old Trafford amid interest from Spain and other Premier League clubs.

Gabriel is tipped as the heir to Cristiano Ronaldo’s throne, and he could achieve this at United, however despite his new deal, Ineos will know that they need to convince him again with a scholarship deal in 2027.

Manchester United could potentially use JJ Gabriel on the post-season or pre-season tour

United will be keen to give Gabriel experiences and opportunities that show him and his family that he is best served remaining at the club for the start of his career, with promises sure to have been involved in discussions.

This is the reason that he has been promoted so rapidly to the U18s, and has been proving it is deserved with his performances. Due to this, United could be tempted to offer him more to leave no doubt about rejecting interest from elsewhere.

This may see Gabriel given some level of involvement in pre-season with United set for a tour to the USA later this month.

This would be purely just to give him the experience and to let Amorim build a relationship with him, which could be another factor in retaining the talented winger.

United should do whatever they can to keep Gabriel beyond his 16th birthday, which is when he can move abroad, and the next 12 months will likely be key.
