Manchester United academy midfielder Rafe McCormack has gone from strength to strength this season and is now considered one of the most exciting talents, earning U21 recognition.
Darren Fletcher’s midfield was torn apart earlier this season with Jim Thwaites and Amir Ibragimov injured, but Manchester United had alternatives waiting to step up.
Rafe McCormack has been the main standout in this regard, emerging as a very talented defensive midfielder, finding himself a new permanent role in the process.
As his rise continues, here is everything you will need to know about United’s newest midfield academy gem.
Which Manchester United academy midfielder should be in the first-team next season?
Who is the biggest talent right now?
Who is Rafe McCormack?
McCormack is a versatile right-footed defensive midfielder who has also shown class as a central defender for Manchester United’s youth sides.
At 17 years old, McCormack is a first-year scholar for the club, yet has already made serious strides into the U21s, having excelled in the U18s.

McCormack is the most natural number six in the academy and already shows real composure on the ball, while being strong defensively and handling himself against older opponents.
Born in Bradford on December 14th, 2008, McCormack actually represents the Republic of Ireland at a U19 level and could soon join Jacob Devaney in the U21s.
Alongside Jay McEvoy and Devaney, United potentially have three future star midfielders who will all be representing Ireland.
WHO is the most UNDERRATED academy talent at Manchester United right now? 🤔🔥
JJ Gabriel and Shea Lacey are obviously exciting but who else are you excited by?
McCormack’s 2025/26 campaign for Manchester United
Six months ago, McCormack was a defensive prospect and not considered to be one of the highest-rated at the club.
But he has absolutely transformed himself since then, with Fletcher trusting him to move into midfield, where he has excelled.
McCormack has shone in front of Michael Carrick by doing the simple things really well, winning the ball back and giving it to more progressive passers.
Having also impressed on his U21 debut, McCormack is seeing his stock rise dramatically right now, and it is completely deserved.
Next up for McCormack will be helping United’s U18s win trophies this season, and then we can envision pre-season opportunities given how many first-teamers will be absent due to the World Cup.
