Shola Shoretire nominated for PL2 award after impressive performances

Manchester United youngster Shola Shoretire has been nominated for a Premier League 2 award.

Shoretire has been nominated for the February player of the month award at under-23 level.

He is one of seven players up for the award, and it comes after an unbeaten three matches for the Red Devils last month.

United beat West Ham 3-1, drew with Crystal Palace 2-2 after recovering from being 2-0 down, and then beat Derby County 5-2.

Shoretire continues to build his CV

Shoretire was pivotal to United success in these games, particularly the victory over West Ham. He produced two assists in this game, helping the team turn cut through the Hammers defence with incisive passes.

He followed this up with an assist against Palace for Zidane Iqbal’s strike, before scoring in the heavy win against Derby after a defence-splitting pass from Hannibal.

With four goal contributions in three games, Shoretire is deserved of his nomination for the award.

Shoretire has just turned 18 and is continuing to build up his CV. This season he has 16 goal contributions, made up of eight goals and eight assists.

He has been by far United’s most consistent performer, although he has not had a first team look in since his substitute cameo in the Champions League against Young Boys.

Shoretire would no doubt have liked to have done a little better in the UEFA Youth League match against Dortmund last week. United drew 2-2 and while the teenager had a tidy game, he was not one of the standout performers.

But with United’s first team players failing to perform, and even at risk of dropping out of the top four race, there may be more incentive for Ralf Rangnick to throw caution to the wind and experiment more as the season concludes.

As we have said all season, what is the point in Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata being in the matchday squad when they are not expected to play?

Currently as it stands, Shoretire’s next game will be on March 15 when the under-23s take on Leeds.
