A very special season is brewing for the Manchester United under-18s team.

The team played their first league game of 2024 at the weekend, against Newcastle, looking to build on a successful 2023 in which they won 10 out of 10 league games.

Coach Adam Lawrence’s side won 3-1 to make it 11 games in a row, continuing a relentless winning campaign which has gone unmatched in the division.

United are top of the table, with second placed Liverpool nine points behind – having played one game more.

Ethan Williams leads win

Young winger Ethan Williams was one of our players to watch for 2024, after a staggering 21 goal contributions at academy level during the calendar year of 2023.

He led the way in this one, scoring a low effort from outside the box to put Manchester United 1-0 up.

Williams has seven goals plus four assists in all competitions this season, which has seen him play the majority of his football at under-21 level, rather than for the under-18s.

Back with the 18s for now, Williams was the catalyst for the victory, which was followed up by goals from winger Ashton Missin and midfielder Jayce Fitzgerald.

While there is half a season to go, Manchester United look like clear contenders to win the under-18s league title. The nearest the side have come in recent seasons is second place.

This group of players looks special, and are playing with confidence with goals coming from all over the pitch.

A title can help to build a winning culture, but ultimately what is most exciting about the football being played at this level is the potential this group of players have, as they look to go on and follow in Kobbie Mainoo‘s footsteps to the first team.

FA Youth Cup tie upcoming

The under-18s have another important match this week where they will resume action in the FA Youth Cup.

United beat Derby 1-0 in the last round with Ethan Williams scoring the goal, and this time around take on Swindon Town away from home.

The match will be held on Tuesday 16th at 7pm. United lost away at Stoke in the fourth round last year, but did win the trophy in 2022, with Alejandro Garnacho firing the young side to silverware.
