Manchester United are into the FA Youth Cup fourth round after a victory over Derby County.

A second half goal from Ethan Williams gave Manchester United a 1-0 win over a spirited Derby side at Old Trafford.

It has set the team on course towards challenging for the trophy the under-18s won in 2022, led by Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.

There is a long way to go, an away clash at Swindon Town is up next. Focusing on tonight’s win, the entire team can be proud of their contribution, with a few standouts.

Jack Fletcher praised

Two players in particular were singled out for praise during Manchester United’s win, midfielder Jack Fletcher and goalkeeper Elyh Harrison.

MUTV commentator Ben Thornley was particularly impressed with Fletcher’s passing quality and nimble footwork.

He said: “He’s really impressed me. Lovely close ball control, elegant passer.”

Speaking after a cross-field pass in the 70th minute he added: “He gave great examples of his passing and vision in the first half, he’s not been quite as influential in the second half but that was a wonderful ball, it really is.”

Jack Fletcher, signed in the summer along with his twin brother Tyler, has already caught Erik ten Hag‘s eye, being called to train with the first team already, amid claims he will be fast-tracked.

Elyh Harrison talked up

Former United prospect Danny Simpson talked up goalkeeper Harrison, who kept up the strong defensive record of the team, who have conceded only six goals in 10 league games.

He talked up his ability on the ball, commenting: “He’s very confident, he’s very good on the ball, he can zing it, he can feed it in, he’s like an outfield player. He’s done really well.”

Speaking after a double save he made in the first half, Simpson spoke about Harrison’s desire to get the team moving quickly.

“Straight away he was setting it on another attack,” he added.
