Manchester United’s young players are aiming for a big 2023 as they hope to follow in Alejandro Garnacho’s footsteps.

One of the club’s exciting future stars is beginning to make an impact at youth level, and this is James Scanlon.

Who is James Scanlon?

James Scanlon was one of three young players Manchester United signed from Derby County in a triple-deal in 2021, joining along with Malachi Sharpe and Sekou Kaba.

Scanlon is an attacking midfielder with an eye for goal who is at his best making an impact in the final third.

The teenager turned 16 earlier this season and made his competitive debut for Manchester United’s under-18 side in December in the win over Middlesbrough, featuring as a substitute for the final 30 minutes.

Scanlon was part of the move which led to United’s third goal in the 3-0 win, showing he is ready to step up. We can expect to see a lot more of him in 2023.

Up until now Scanlon had been part of the under-16 squad, featuring in the Super Cup NI during the summer.

James Scanlon nationality

James Scanlon is a Gibraltar youth international, although he would also be eligible to play for England.

Scanlon has made four appearances for Gibraltar at under-17 level, scoring three goals, including a brace on his debut, and also has two assists.

With the small nation one of international football’s minnows, there is a chance he gets fast-tracked into their squad for the Euro 2024 qualifiers.
