Manchester United seems set to sign highly-rated left-back Harry Amass, 16, from Championship side Watford.

According to a tweet from the youth account MUFC_Youth, who are known to be highly reliable when it comes to transfers around the youth academy players, the full-back has signed his contract and passed his medical and is set to sign for United, with an announcement expected soon.

United have ramped up their youth drive over the past few years with plenty of academy players from other clubs being brought into Old Trafford.

The defender has been linked to United previously, with Manchester Evening News confirming that a deal had been agreed with the London side for the Englishman.

Who is Amass?

Amass signed an early scholarship deal that ties him to Watford until he is 18, meaning that under the Premier League’s Elite Player Performance Plan, United would have to pay compensation for his signature.

The left-back has been at Watford since he was nine and is regarded as a player with huge potential.

He has already made appearances for both the U18 and U21s and was an unused substitute for the first team when they faced Reading in the FA Cup back in January.

United’s youth drive

As mentioned, United have brought in a host of academy players over the last few years as they tried to match Manchester City’s youth intake. As United’s rivals were seemingly hoovering up all of the academy talent.

Alejandro Garnacho, from Atletico Madrid, Marc Jurado, from Barcelona and Alvaro Fernandez, from Real Madrid are just a selection of players now in and around the United first team setup.

United swooped in for Charlie McNeil during the forward’s time at City’s academy. Pep Guardiola’s side are also set to lose out on Darren Fletcher’s sons, Jack and Tyler, who are highly rated at City, according to ESPN.
