Manchester United’s under-21 side were back in action in Premier League 2 again.
It had been nearly a month out for the young Red Devils, whose game was called off last weekend due to poor weather conditions. They faced Newcastle United’s academy in what would be a tough test back in action.
They certainly rose to the occasion. Travis Binnion’s side ran out 3-2 winners, thanks to goals from James Nolan, Shola Shoretire and Joe Hugill.
Hugill was particularly impressive – making yet another first-team claim to Erik ten Hag.

Joe Hugill shines for Man Utd U21s
The striker, as described by Ben Ibson on MUTV, as the ‘man in form’ continued to impress against Newcastle.
He was involved in all three goals. He pretty much set up the first with a blistering run down the left wing, which he then squared to Shoretire who got a brief touch to set in the path of Nolan who scored his first-ever Premier League 2 goal.
The second of the match was Hugill’s, who calmly converted a penalty won by Mateo Mejia. He sent it low to the keeper’s right, giving the young Magpies shot-stopper no chance.
His third was all about some good movement in the box. He drew away a few of the defenders to ensure Shoretire was in space to slot home from a Mejia cross and gave United all three points.
Hugill seriously in contention, particularly with unreliable Anthony Martial
Is it finally time for Erik ten Hag to take note of Hugill’s performances? He has to be a better option than Anthony Martial.
The young striker has been on the bench quite a few times for the first-team squad but hasn’t yet featured under the Dutch manager.
Hugill looks seriously dangerous, and if Kobbie Mainoo‘s introduction into the squad has shown us anything, is that if you’re good enough, you’re old enough.
Hugill will likely not feature against Liverpool, given the fact he played 90 minutes yesterday – however, he surely has to be in contention going forward.
