Manchester United were beaten 2-1 by Man City on Thursday night as a second trophy fell through the fingers of Darren Fletcher’s side this season.
Among the better performers was Amir Ibragimov, with the Russian first playing on the right wing, which was a bit of a throwback. Before then, moving into midfield for the second half.
Ibragimov impressed in the defeat with his work-rate, ball progression, and willingness to take the ball in tough moments. But ultimately, it was his post-match actions that caught the eye.

Amir Ibragimov consoles JJ Gabriel after FA Youth Cup final loss
Ibragimov is a real leader for Manchester United’s academy whenever he is on the pitch, leading by example with his effort levels, passion and commitment all second to none.
Off the pitch, he is also a leader and role model for his younger teammates.
He demonstrated this as United’s players picked up the runners-up medals after the defeat.
Ibragimov and JJ Gabriel were the final two players to get their medals, and MEN’s Steven Railston caught a moment between the pair on camera.
Gabriel was clearly distraught, walking slowly after getting his medal with his head down, but Ibragimov spotted this and waited for him.
Ibragimov grabbed Gabriel around the shoulders and walked away with his younger teammate, who needed that support, having looked really disappointed in the immediate aftermath.
For Ibragimov at 18 to have the awareness to notice a teammate struggling and put his own feelings aside to help him is the sign of a brilliant teammate and leader.
WHERE does Amir Ibragimov rank in Man United’s most exciting prospects list?⭐️🤔
Ibragimov is a future Manchester United captain
Ibragimov is often forgotten when the wonderkids at Manchester United are listed, due to his injuries, which have stunted his progression.
But he has the ability and talent to play for the first-team one day, while mentally, Ibragimov is as strong as they come, knowing how to act as a United player.
Darren Fletcher hailed Ibragimov as an example setter within the academy, teaching his teammates and setting standards.
These are the qualities of a United captain, and if Ibragimov can fulfill his potential, there is no reason he can’t wear that armband one day, because he is more than good enough potential-wise.
Gabriel will appreciate Ibragimov’s actions, and it should get Ibragimov credit within the club.
