Former Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi praises Manchester United centre-back Raphael Varane

Former Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi has praised Manchester United centre-back Raphael Varane and talked up his compatriot’s importance for France.

Despite Les Bleus boss Didier Deschamps declaring that the 29-year-old was fit enough to feature in France’s World Cup opener against Australia, United’s number 19 was an unused substitute in the defending champions’ 4-1 win against the Socceroos.

Ibrahima Konate and Dayot Upamecano were Deschamps’ centre-back pairing with Varane taking the watching brief.

The 87-time France international will be hoping to feature in France’s second Group D match, which comes against Denmark on Saturday where Varane could come up against his Manchester United teammate Christian Eriksen.

Despite not playing for over a month after suffering an injury against Chelsea last month, former Gunner Guendouzi, who is currently playing for Ligue 1 giants Marseille alongside Manchester United loanee Eric Bailly and former Red Devils flop Alexis Sanchez, has sung the four-time Champions League winner’s praises.

Varane played an instrumental part in France being crowned world champions in Russia four years ago and Guendouzi is under no illusion of the importance the former Los Blancos star brings to the national side.

Guendouzi told L’Equipe: “There is no need to talk about his footballing qualities, he is a very high-level defender. He inspires us with a lot of confidence when he plays.

“He will help us a lot through his experience, he talks to us a lot, to help young people. It’s also necessary to underline the good match if Ibou [Konaté) and Dayot (Upamecano). Raphael is going to be very important in the tournament.”

Since joining Manchester United from Real Madrid last summer, Varane has had several injury setbacks.
