New reports claim Manchester United are back in for Nikola Milenkovic.
Gianluca Di Marzio report United have contacted Fiorentina to enquire over the centre-back’s availability.
The Independent first reported former United boss Jose Mourinho was keen last year.
Di Marzio claims United were knocked back in January for Milenkovic too, with Fiorentina looking for £45 million.
United have not yet bid this summer, just enquired, and it is claimed Fiorentina want to keep the promising 21-year-old.
Is he any good?
Yes, is the quick answer. Milenkovic is regarded as one of the best defenders in his age range in Italian football.
He is a full Serbian international, featuring at last summer’s World Cup.
His former Partizan Belgrade boss Ivan Tomic told Mozzart Sport: “Milenkovic has [the] physical characteristics of a beast. He reads the game well, plays the ball, and should have a great career ahead of him.”
He has inevitably been compared to Nemanja Vidic, but ESPN report he bases his playing style on Gerard Pique.
Milenkovic would be a cheaper option than £90 million rated Harry Maguire.
He would cost around half the price, and he is five years younger.
The downside is that unlike Maguire, he would have to adjust to the Premier League.
The way he has risen to challenges in his career so far suggests he can cope. At 6-foot-4 he is well built for the physical test of English football.
It’s crazy, because United could sign Milenkovic and Toby Alderweireld combined for cheaper than Maguire. But asking for two centre-backs would probably be pushing it.
As with many reports from Italy, this could be the start and the end of it, and United are back to Maguire. We’ll see.
