Three free agents for Manchester United to consider after deadline day

Transfer deadline day has come to a close with Manchester United ending the window with six signings.

The club’s business looks to be at a close – but there is also the possibility of adding a free agent, if Erik ten Hag chose to go this way.

At one stage on deadline day it appeared like former United forward Memphis Depay could terminate his contract with Barcelona. He announced late in the window he would be staying put at The Spanish club.

United moved for one free agent earlier this summer, snapping up Christian Eriksen, who has become a regular in Ten Hag’s midfield.

A late move now is less likely, but in any case, let’s take a look at the best options out there for United if the club chose to take a look at the free agent market…

Diego Costa

If United were to choose to try and sign a striker to add to the ranks, former Premier League forward Diego Costa is an option to consider.

Costa, 33, most recently played for Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro, where he scored five goals in 19 games.

The former Brazil international had a spell at Atletico Madrid before this, with his better days long behind him.

Unfortunately it is slim pickings beyond this, with other free agent strikers like Matej Vydra and Ze Luis nowhere near good enough to make a difference. Costa at least would add a bit of fight.

Santiago Arias

With United arguably needing to strengthen at right-back, one option could be to take a look at Santiago Arias.

The defender played more than 170 times for PSV Eindhoven, and has 54 international caps for Colombia.

Still only 30, the full-back has more to contribute. He spent last season on loan at Granada before being released by Atletico Madrid earlier this summer.

Dan-Axel Zagadou

Manchester United were linked with a move for Borussia Dortmund talent Dan-Axel Zagadou back in January.

German outlet Fussball Transfers claimed Zagadou’s agents were in contact with United, with his contract running down.

The 23-year-old centre-back has been capped by France at under-21 level, and made 19 appearances for Dortmund last season.

Zagadou has been linked with both West Ham and Inter Milan, The Sun claimed, and he is unlikely to be without a club for much longer.

If Manchester United were interested, it probably would have happened by now, but he is a player with his best years still ahead of him.

Don’t forget: Former Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata is still without a club. There’s little chance of a return, with the Spaniard expected to make a decision on his future shortly.
