Sergio Gomez responds when told Manchester United hold interest in him
Manchester United have a big task ahead to try and bolster the team across various positions this summer once the new manager arrives.
One area where the club may be well stocked is left-back, with both Luke Shaw and Alex Telles battling it out for position, while Alvaro Fernandez is an exciting young prospect in the under-23s.
This has not stopped the club being linked with new additions, with The Sun claiming last November that Manchester United had sent scouts to watch him.
Gomez, 21, plays for Belgian side Anderlecht, having been recruited from Borussia Dortmund last summer by Vincent Kompany
He had previously joined Dortmund in 2018 after leaving Barcelona, and is now enjoying the finest season of his career.
Gomez has been flourishing in Belgium, scoring six goals and providing 14 assists, a staggering 20 goal contributions from left-back.
Different leagues of course, but that’s double the amount of goals scored than Luke Shaw has managed in his entire United career (3).
At 21, clubs are paying attention and regardless of United’s options at the position, interest is likely to have been further intrigued by his performances.
Gomez has been starring for Spain’s under-21 side recently too, where he has a staggering six goals and six assists in nine appearances.
Gomez asked about United interest
In an interview with Cadena Ser this week, Gomez was told, ‘Ajax, United and Inter have asked about you’, and asked if he pays attention to the rumours.
Gomez responded: “I’m focused on the last few months that I have left. I’m focusing on the national team, on the club and taking advantage of all the opportunities. I don’t know anything, really.”
He did add he may be keen on a return to Barcelona if offered, commenting, “It would not be bad to go back to what was my home for eight years. They helped me a lot as a player and as a person. I am very grateful.”
The Spanish talent’s record warrants attention, but somebody would have to leave the club in order for there to be room for him to fit into United’s mix, while Brandon Williams’ return from loan in the summer in an extra complication.
Alvaro Fernandez’s presence is more likely to prevent United from actually moving for Gomez, the youngster has eight assists for United’s under-23s this season and three goals.
One way or another, Gomez is an exciting talent who Anderlecht will struggle to hold onto this summer. If the club’s new manager really takes a fancy to him, it’s possible Telles and Williams are moved on and Fernandez sent out on loan, perhaps even to Anderlecht.
