Sergino Dest set to clinch move to AC Milan after Manchester United snub

Sergino Dest is set to clinch a move to AC Milan after Manchester United backed away from a potential move.

Dest had been linked with a deadline day move to Manchester United, with Barcelona making clear he could leave, by axing him from their squad for the opening games of the season.

The Mail reported Dest was considering a switch to United, where he would have linked back up with Erik ten Hag, his former manager at Ajax. The MEN had claimed United had held talks with Barcelona.

However, The Athletic reported yesterday that United had decided not to move for Dest, electing to keep Aaron Wan-Bissaka as back-up right-back instead.

Sergino Dest set to clinch move to AC Milan

Fabrizio Romano reports Dest is now set to clinch a move to AC Milan before the transfer deadline.

He says a loan deal with an option to buy is agreed, and Dest is now set to fly to Milan to seal the move.

He will link up with former Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic at AC Milan, the reigning Serie A champions.

This move draws a line under any late speculation that Manchester United could make a sudden U-turn on deadline day and sign the right-back.

It’s unclear whether United decided not to sign Dest simply because they did not want to, or because there was no buyer for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Even sending Wan-Bissaka on loan and then landing Dest on loan would have felt fairly pointless. United will try to work with the options they have, and as back-up options go, Wan-Bissaka is an acceptable one.

The position is one United could look to address in the future, when there is more money to spend. For now, the summer budget might have been blown already.
