Manchester United should consider Lazio's star duo as solution to problems
If Manchester United are serious about adding firepower and creativity to their young squad then Lazio’s star duo Ciro Immobile and Luis Alberto deserve to be in the equation.
After missing out on Erling Haaland, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is still targeting a replacement for Romelu Lukaku.
Solskjaer believes that Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford all have the capabilities to develop into world class goalscorers.
However, there have been numerous times this season when United are chasing a goal that they have missed that experienced presence upfront who can come up with the goods when they need it the most.
The Red Devils’ problematic midfield is crying out for a creative technician to lead them into a new era and finally move forward after years of stagnation.
Solskjaer could significantly bolster United’s goalscoring output if the club managed to pull off the double coup of Immobile and Luis Alberto.
It is Robert Lewandowski’s name which is currently being branded as the best number 9 in European football, but the big Pole is sharing the top European scorer throne with Immobile.
Across Europe’s top five leagues, the pair have already scored 19 league goals this campaign.
Immobile has scored that staggering number from just 17 matches. He has only failed to find the back of net in just four league matches and from late September to December, the Italian netted in 9 consecutive Serie A games.
Across all competitions this season, the 29-year-old has 21 goals and 5 assists from 22 matches.
Immobile’s goalscoring exploits have been key in Lazio’s quest to dethrone both Juventus and Inter Milan in the Serie A title race.
In 156 appearances for Lazio, Immobile has scored 107 goals and laid on a further 30 assists.
He is on track to better his personal best Serie A campaign, which came 2 years ago when he netted 29 times.
Despite Marcus Rashford producing his personal best, United’s talisman needs help and if he was playing alongside a predatory forward like Immobile, United’s attack wouldn’t look as worryingly one dimensional as it does currently.
Immobile benefitting from service
Manchester United fans would relish seeing former Liverpool flop Luis Alberto be the man to help them get back to the top of the footballing mountain.
Only Kevin de Bruyne has more assists (12) across Europe’s top five leagues than Alberto (11).
Four of Immobile’s Serie A goals have been assisted via attacking midfielder Alberto, the pair are currently the deadliest assist to goalscorer partnership in Italy.
The 27-year-old has shown in his performances already against Juventus this season that he is a man that relishes the big occasion.
The Spanish international got two assists against The Old Lady in the 3-1 Serie A win and scored in an identical victory in the final of the Supercoppa Italiana.
Alberto is improving with every passing year since joining Lazio in August 2016, in 86 Serie A matches, he has scored 19 times and produced 32 assists.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may want to sign young players who can develop and gel together in the coming years, but he needs to strike a balance with experienced players who are at the peak of their powers.
Immobile and Alberto are one of the deadliest combinations in European football and if Solskjaer wants to get his rebuild project out of the blocks, Lazio’s star duo could be the men to spearhead our revival.
