Manchester United scouts watch Blackburn Rovers striker Ben Brereton Diaz

Manchester United scouts have reportedly watched Blackburn Rovers striker Ben Brereton Diaz, according to 90min.

The Red Devils headline a number of Premier League clubs that have watched the Chilean international in recent weeks.

The 23-year-old, who plays alongside former United flop Alexis Sanchez for the Chilean national team, is currently the Championship’s joint top scorer with nine goals this season.

Blackburn’s number 22 scored 22 Championship goals last season, which was only bettered by promoted duo Dominic Solanke (29) and Aleksandar Mitrovic (43).

Both Solanke and Mitrovic have impressed in the Premier League this season after making their returns to the top-flight with Bournemouth and Fulham respectfully.

Brereton Diaz, whose contract at Ewood Park expires in June, will also have aspirations of replicating his Championship goalscoring form in the big time.

With Cristiano Ronaldo highly unlikely to extend his second stint at Manchester United beyond this season, Erik ten Hag will want to bolster his forward options in the coming transfer windows.

With Anthony Martial struggling to stay fit and no replacement brought in for the released Edinson Cavani, the Red Devils are light on numbers up front.

While Brereton Diaz isn’t the superstar name that Manchester United fans hope is brought in to lead our front line, he could be a shrewd acquisition that bolsters our depth.

The 14-time Chile international is very much unproven at Premier League level, but if the South American was potentially brought in on a free transfer, then it would pave way for Ten Hag to splash the cash on a household name.

Several other Premier League clubs are reportedly interested in Brereton Diaz and some top-flight sides may test Blackburn’s resolve in January with a bid in excess of £10m potentially being enough to lure him away from Ewood Park.

But United are unlikely to target a forward player in the new year unless Ronaldo does depart.

Brereton Diaz isn’t going to be the man to fire Manchester United to trophies, but he’s certainly a name to keep an eye on and with United being so heavily linked with Marko Arnautovic in the summer, it’s definitely a case of expect the unexpected and if Ten Hag sees the Chilean forming a part of the plans, then the Dutchman has to be backed.

Brereton Diaz actually started his career with United at the age of seven only to be released at 14.
