Gabriel Veron linked with move to Manchester United

Brazilian winger Gabriel Veron has been linked with a move to Manchester United, report The Mirror.

Veron, 19, plays for Brazilian side Palmeiras and is reported to be available for just £10 million. This is significantly less than his £54 million release clause.

The teenager is a right winger, and a potentially cheaper alternative to Antony, who Erik ten Hag signed for Ajax from Sao Paulo.

The Mirror report United would consider sending Veron out on loan, rather than putting him straight into the first team.

Gabriel Veron linked with move to Manchester United

Veron plays as a right winger for Palmeiras and has three assists in 11 games for his club so far this season.

He has made 93 first team appearances for Palmeiras already, scoring 13 goals so far. Veron is under contract to 2026.

Former Brazil international Bebeto has previously talked him up, telling Goal: “He’s a kid with enormous talent.

“I watched him score a goal dribbling from almost his own half before finding the net with a quality finish, calmly beating the opposition goalkeeper.”

Former Palmeiras manager Vanderlei Luxemburgo told Fox Sports: “Certainly, the market is keeping an eye on Gabriel. He is one of the five most valued young players in the world.

“He has a quality that football needs today: speed with a change of direction. He can reach speeds of up to 35 km (22 miles per hour), which is a fantastic speed.”

He has been linked with a move to Europe on and off over the past couple of years, and Italian newspaper La Nazione claimed in late 2020 that Manchester United were one of the interested teams.

A wise investment but United need a right winger who can contribute now

Signing the ‘next Antony’ for £10 million rather than pay £69 million for the Ajax star is a commendable approach from United.

However, with Amad and Facundo Pellistri, United already have two developmental options for the right wing position.

If United were to sign another right winger, the club should be buying one who can contribute immediately. Its doubtful either Amad or Pellistri are quite ready now.

A move for Veron may be smart, but its also a little of a perplexing one given the current make-up of United’s squad, so this transfer may not quite work out to be what the Red Devils actually need.
