Erik ten Hag sent Manchester United scouts to watch AC Milan's Rafael Leao

Erik ten Hag sent Manchester United scouts to watch AC Milan’s Rafael Leao in Champions League games against Chelsea, according to The Mirror.

The Red Devils are reportedly monitoring the 23-year-old who is valued at around £60 million.

But the Portugal international, who has emerged as one of the most talented and sought-after forwards across European football in the last couple of years, is also the subject of interest from Chelsea and Manchester City.

The former Lille man has been capped 11 times by Fernando Santos for the Selecao, and Milan’s prized asset will be joining Diogo Dalot, Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo in Qatar next month for the 2022 World Cup.

Ten Hag is reportedly a big admirer of the Rossoneri’s number 17, and it is claimed that the former Ajax manager sent Red Devils scouts to go and watch Leao in Milan’s last two Champions League games against Graham Potter’s Chelsea.

The Mirror report: “The Portuguese international has less than 18 months left on his contract and is refusing to sign a new deal despite a five-year offer worth in excess of £100,000-a-week being put on the table.”

While Manchester United are unlikely to delve into the market during January, Leao could emerge as a key Ten Hag target next summer.

With Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract expiring in June and Anthony Martial seemingly struggling to stay fit, bolstering United’s forward line is likely to be a priority for Ten Hag next summer after the Red Devils failed to replace Edinson Cavani.

But like Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Anthony Elanga, Leao’s best position is playing out on the left.

Leao helped fire Stefano Pioli’s Milan to their first Serie A title in 11 years last season, and he scored 14 goals across all competitions as well as providing 12 assists.

So far this season, the 11-time Portugal international, whose agent is Jorge Mendes, has scored four goals and supplied seven assists from 12 Milan matches.

Like Martial and Rashford, Leao possesses the versatility to play anywhere across the forward line, and he would be an exciting addition to an already talented forward line.
