Benjamin Pavard keen on new challenge, with Manchester United looking for new right-back

It would be fair to describe Manchester United as a little of a ‘sleeping giant’ right now. This is a club with huge potential, underperforming, and primed to return to former glories.

New manager Erik ten Hag is starting the club’s recovery, and oversaw a succession of shrewd transfer deals, including a move for Casemiro.

Casemiro won everything there was to win at Real Madrid, and signed for Manchester United because he wanted a new challenge, and saw the potential and pulling power at Old Trafford.

It was the same decision made by Raphael Varane the previous summer, and they won’t be the last.

In addition to striving to sign top young talents like Antony and Lisandro Martinez, United are also recognising there is a market for proven quality, if they have the right attitude and want to sign for the right reasons, and not for a pay day.

Benjamin Pavard keen on new challenge

World Cup winning right-back Benjamin Pavard is at a career crossroads, unclear on his next move. He has won everything at Bayern Munich, multiple Bundesliga titles and the Champions League.

The Frenchman told L’Equipe this week he is ready to explore a new challenge he can get behind.

He explained: “There’ve been no concrete talks over new contract. I’ve immense respect for Bayern — I’m not against discovering a new project.

“Maybe now is the time. Why not discover new country? The sporting project has to be interesting.”

United tick all the boxes. The club has prestige, is in a new league for Pavard to learn, and are moving in the right direction under Erik ten Hag. He would be joining at the right time.

L’Equipe reported in August that United had enquired about Pavard’s situation. He is under contract at Bayern until 2024, which would make a move next more likely next summer than in January.

The defender is still only 26 and has plenty left to offer, and of course, Manchester United are looking for a right-back.

Diogo Dalot needs competition, and his contract situation is not yet resolved. His deal is due to expire in 2023.

Pavard would be an ideal alternative to bring in to compete with Dalot, adding more leadership to the team. He could also be tempted by reuniting with France colleague Raphael Varane.

This is a potential deal worth keeping an eye on next year. Pavard’s comments would suggest he is open to proposals.
