Manchester United have two of the most exciting young full-backs in the game in the form of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw.

However, that has not stopped Ole Gunnar Solskjaer from reportedly looking to strengthen further.

Left-back seems to be one of the main areas of focus this summer, with Sergio Reguilon (MEN) and Vitaliy Mykolenko (MEN) both linked.

According to Marca, Reguilon could be available for just £22million this summer. That is a bargain given his performances last season.

But Mykolenko would be even cheaper, with Area Napoli claiming earlier this year that he is priced at around £13.5million.

What these two players have in common – apart from being potential bargains – is a potential warning for United’s current full-backs.

Both are attacking defenders with the stats to back that up. Reguilon scored three goals and provided five assists last season, while Mykolenko netted four times and set up a further seven.

If United are genuinely interested in both, it suggests that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants a lot more from his full-backs next season.

That is as important to right-back Wan-Bissaka as it is to left-back Shaw. After all, the pair managed just one goal and eight assists between them in the last campaign.

Final-ball full-backs

There is no doubting the United duo’s defensive ability. Yet Solskjaer has pushed time and again for more in the final third. If new full-backs arrive, the pressure will be on the first-choice options to up their game at both ends of the field.

If United play a diamond formation following the arrival of Donny van de Beek, the pressure could be on their full-backs to provide more ammunition further forward.

Reguilon and Mykolenko offer that in abundance. And, while it may be left-back that is the focus this summer, United will need increased goals and assists down the right, too.

Wan-Bissaka has justified his £50million price tag (BBC) while £27million Shaw (BBC) is back to his best. But United are clearly looking for goals and assists from all areas of the field these days.

Both men should take note.
