Man Utd consider two goalkeeper targets with Premier League experience, including Karl Darlow as a free agent

Manchester United will be in the market for a new back-up goalkeeper should Altay Bayindir move on this summer, after Senne Lammens made the first-choice role his own last term.

This time last year, Andre Onana was Manchester United’s number one, but patience was wearing thin with the mistake-prone Cameroonian stopper.

That led to an inexperienced Senne Lammens joining from Royal Antwerp, allowing Onana to be sent on loan to Trabzonspor.

As we approach the summer transfer window, United have agreed an extension with Tom Heaton to remain as the third-choice keeper. Another back-up keeper could be required if Altay Bayindir is sold.

Man Utd eye moves for Sam Johnstone and Karl Darlow

Although Bayindir had a run of games at the beginning of last season under Ruben Amorim, the Turkey international was far from convincing.

Bayindir could leave Old Trafford in search of regular football, with interest building in Turkey for his signature as he prepares for the 2026 World Cup.

This is why United want to sign an experienced deputy goalkeeper, as per The Athletic, with an approach being weighed up for Karl Darlow, who is a free agent this summer following an impressive campaign at Leeds.

The 35-year-old made 22 Premier League appearances in 2025/26.

Former United academy goalkeeper Sam Johnstone is another option. The 33-year-old has two years left on his Wolves contract.

Either Darlow or Johnstone would be a good buy as deputy goalkeepers because of their experience in the Premier League, but they would also count towards United’s homegrown quota.

United are also planning to sell Radek Vitek, who has returned from a successful loan at Bristol City.

Who was the last goalkeeper signed by Man Utd with Premier League experience?

Last summer, we saw Ineos prioritise players with Premier League experience.

That is why it comes as no surprise that they are doing the same this summer across the board, even with goalkeepers.

The last keeper to join United – with Premier League experience – was Martin Dubravka, on loan from Newcastle in September 2022.

In terms of permanent signings, Heaton arrived on a free transfer in June 2021.
