A new name has been linked to Manchester United which is not Jadon Sancho or Jude Bellingham. It’s not a pie in the sky £135 million move for Saul Niguez either.

The player concerned is Duje Caleta-Car, and it’s a relatively low cost move being suggested.

French outlet Le10Sport claim United have declared interest in the promising talent, along with City, and he could cost 30 million Euros (£26.7 million).

Here are five facts about the potential United signing…

Who is Duje Caleta-Car?

  1. Caleta-Car is a centre-back who plays for Marseille and has made 26 appearances this season.
  2. Marseille signed him from Red Bull Salzburg in 2018 after he impressed in their run to the Europa League semi-finals. They paid just £15 million.
  3. Caleta-Car is 23-years-old and is part of the Croatian national side. He has five caps to date.
  4. He is being managed by former Chelsea and Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas and the defender is one of the key figures in the boss’ bid to lead the French side back to the top.
  5. Caleta-Car leads Marseille with 2.4 aerial duels won per game this season, of players who have played five matches or more. He stands at 6 foot 4 and is an imposing figure for strikers to deal with.

Is a move likely?

United are not exactly crying out for a centre-back, with both Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe desperate for game time. There’s also Teden Mengi in the academy too.

It is likely Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Chris Smalling will be sold this summer.

So it is possible United look to add another centre-back for depth. If that does happen, then £26 million for a rising star like Caleta-Car is exactly the right type of move to make.

A centre-back likely won’t be a priority, but if Eric Bailly has another injury setback, then this could change.
