United target Moussa Dembele helps Lyon into Europa League quarters
Manchester United have been linked with a summer swoop for Lyon striker Moussa Dembele by The Daily Mail.
United are apparently monitoring his situation with an eye on a £25 million summer move, with his contract at the Ligue 1 outfit set to expire in 2023.
And while United lick their wounds after another European exit, Dembele and Lyon remain in continental action after last night’s fixtures.
Lyon took on Porto in the second leg of their Europa League last 16 clash last night, and Dembele opened the scoring to put his side 2-0 up on aggregate.
Porto pulled a goal back but the French club are through to the last eight, where they could face the likes of Barcelona, West Ham and Rangers.
The goal continues a run of hot form for Dembele.
He now has three goals and an assist in his last three outings, and over a longer period, he has seven strikes and two assists in his last ten.
Firing his side to European glory would be one way to grab United’s attention, with loanee Anthony Martial having failed to help his side past West Ham last night.
Still just 25, Dembele would arrive in the Premier League with a point to prove.
If he can keep up his recent prolific form, he may stand a better chance of convincing United to splash the cash.
And even if he came in, it would be asking a lot for Dembele to carry United’s hopes as the sole striker.
As an alternative to Cristiano Ronaldo, who may not mind sitting on the bench for a chunk of matches while he adjusts to United’s demands, we could do worse.
