Manchester United are reported to be looking at alternative targets to Dayot Upamecano.

The Athletic say United have stepped back from the race to sign the Frenchman, with Bayern Munich in pole position.

Despite this, centre-back remains a position the club are actively trying to strengthen.

Here is a look at five alternatives to Upamecano who could be on United’s shortlist…

Jules Kounde

ESPN linked United with a move for Sevilla defender Jules Kounde as recently as October.

Kounde impressed against United in the Europa League semi-final last season and is also attracting interest from City.

A mid-season deal for the 22-year-old Frenchman is unlikely with Sevilla in the Champions League last 16, but he could become an option next summer.

ESPN reported Sevilla would listen to offers of around £65 million for Kounde, who is in his second season at the club.

Ben White

United continue to be linked with Brighton and Hove Albion centre-back Ben White.

White was reported by the MEN to be on United’s shortlist last week, with interest dating back to the summer.

He signed a new deal with Brighton in the summer after a loan at Leeds, and is valued by the club at around £50 million.

White, 23, is seen as a future England international. He has started all 12 of Brighton’s games this season.

Ibrahima Konate

Ibrahima Konate stepped in for Upamecano for Leipzig last week and he is also a highly rated prospect.

Like Upamecano, Konate is French and is seen as a future international.

He lost several months to injury last season, before being linked to United by Le10Sport back in May.

He performed well against United in Germany and at just 21, he has the traits to be a top centre-back. He is well built and also very mobile, making life difficult for attackers.

Raphael Varane

United have an option to go big and pursue Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.

Varane, 27, has a contract which expires in 2022, meaning Real could seek to cash in.

A swap deal with Paul Pogba could even be viable, exchanging one World Cup winner for another.

Varane would instantly improve United in the short-term, and the MEN has tipped United to make a move.

David Alaba

Bayern Munich defender David Alaba would be another short-term fix, available for very cheap.

Alaba’s contract expires in the summer and he is unwilling to sign a new deal with the European champions.

Sky Sports linked United with a move for Austria international Alaba in the summer. Considering his ability to also fill in at left-back and even defensive midfield, Alaba’s versatility could pay off.

On a free, the 28-year-old could be an astute addition while Axel Tuanzebe and Teden Mengi develop.

Benoit Badiashile

Monaco defender Benoit Badiashile was regularly linked to United through the summer, with RMC Sport even claiming a bid was rejected.

The 19-year-old had an eye-catching start to the season, scoring in his first two games, with none since.

He remains a regular for Monaco, starting 14 Ligue 1 games with the team in sixth place.

Badiashile is a young, raw prospect who United could benefit from moving early on, but he might not immediately improve the first XI.
