Sergej Milinkovic-Savic? Rememeber him? Manchester United are being linked with a move once again.

We would like it to happen, but we are not very convinced at all. Let’s dig in.

On Friday night, Italian outlet Sportsmediaset reported Lazio director Igli Tare was flying to England, claiming he would hold talks with Manchester United over Milinkovic-Savic.

Corriere dello Sport has since denied any meetings with United took place on Tare’s visit.

This one can probably be put to bed as an opportunist report to coincide with rumours about Paul Pogba’s potential exit.

But what if…

Last summer United fans were misled by The Sun which claimed the club had agreed a £80 million transfer with Lazio for Milinkovic-Savic. This proved to be false.

Key to the rumours was former boss Jose Mourinho and his relationship with Milinkovic-Savic’s agent Mateja Kezman. This is not an advantage United have any longer.

This past season Milinkovic-Savic took a step back, as did so many who featured at the World Cup.

He only scored five goals from midfield, compared to the 12 he netted the previous campaign. Lazio finished seventh in Serie A.

Just like Pogba, Milinkovic-Savic wouldn’t be able to do it all at United, but he could be part of the soluation. It would have been smart last summer to bring him in alongside Pogba.

He is a powerful box to box central midfielder who would be an ideal fit for the Premier League. The Serbian is just 24-years-old.

If United are pushed into selling Pogba, Milinkovic-Savic would be one of the better replacements we could find.

Really, given the Pogba situation, United should be proactive and start pushing for a move.

We just aren’t convinced they actually are. Like last summer, we’ll believe it when we see it.
