Former Manchester United star Rafael da Silva has said he would be happy if Liverpool are denied the title.

The league is currently paused with Liverpool agonisingly close to winning their 19th title.

Rafael was part of the United side which last won the title and he spoke to the club’s official website about his favourite memories.

His passion for United shone through, commenting that passing Liverpool’s title tally of 18 was his favourite moment.

He added that it would be ‘great’ for United if Liverpool are denied the league, in the event the season is voided.

He said: “I always say that when you get to 18, and when you pass Liverpool! Everybody’s talking about ‘stop the competition’, no? They don’t get to 20! It will be hard for them, great for us!”

Rafael’s former United teammate Rio Ferdinand previously said the season should be voided on health and safety grounds, The Express reported.

Cancelling the season would deny United the chance to win the FA Cup and Europa League, with the side currently at the quarter-final stages of both competitions. It would also likely mean no Champions League football next season.

It’s easier for former players like Rafael and Rio to take the ‘cancel the season’ stance, but for many fans, seeing Liverpool lose out on a 30 year wait to win a title may be a price worth paying, even if it comes at our own inconvenience.

Backing for Fred

Rafael added that he is a big believer in his fellow Brazilian, Fred, who is enjoying a fantastic second season at United.

The Lyon star believes Fred can get even better and would deserve the club’s player of the year award.

He said: “I’ve been very impressed, because, at the beginning, I heard a lot of comments about him. ‘Ah, he’s no good’ or things like that. I like what he did, because it’s about mentality as well.

“He’s just turned everything around. Maybe he can be our best player at Manchester this season. We can see he’s a great player.”
