Predicted Manchester United line-up v Aston Villa

Manchester United will continue to balance making changes and rotating, while attempting to keep a winning team against Aston Villa.

United have gained 10 points from a possible 12 from the last four home matches and a real opportunity presents itself tonight.

Liverpool’s draw at Newcastle in midweek allows United to catch them up and tie level on points at the top of the table with a win here.

Aston Villa will be tricky opponents, having famously won 7-2 against Liverpool earlier this season. They sit just four points behind United.

Four changes and system change

United’s defence should pick itself. Eric Bailly and Harry Maguire will start again. The only question here is if Bailly is not up to making a fourth start in 10 days. Axel Tuanzebe is the alternative to step in against his former loan club.

Luke Shaw will be back in at left-back for Alex Telles after replacing him in the win over Wolves. That is the first expected change to the team.

There will be another two changes in midfield. Scott McTominay and Fred will start, with Nemanja Matic and Mason Greenwood making way.

Greenwood dropping out of the team to make room for an extra midfielder will mean a change in formation, with United playing a midfield diamond.

Getting the quartet of Fred, Scott McTominay, Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes is a strong combination and balance of flair and work rate, and United will need to win the midfield battle.

Up front there will likely be a fourth change, with Anthony Martial coming in to replace Edinson Cavani, who is suspended.

Martial is fresh after being a substitute against Wolves, and has been coming into form recently. This is an opportunity for him to start the New Year with a goal or two.
