Mauricio Pochettino remains Manchester United’s number one choice to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, according to reports.
The pressure on the Norwegian has hit new heights following the club’s 5-0 hammering to Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday.
However, following a boardroom meeting which included Sir Alex Ferguson being present at the training ground yesterday, Solskjaer has allegedly been given the next three games to save his job.
But the Daily Star are reporting that the stay of execution gives the club the chance to gauge Pochettino’s availability ahead of the November international break.
Pochettino is reportedly the choice of Sir Alex, with the Scotsman being a huge admirer of the Argentine’s style of play.
The 49-year-old, who has been previously linked with the Old Trafford job several times is currently in charge of Paris Saint Germain.
The former Tottenham manager could have been pursued more vigorously to take over from Jose Mourinho at the Theatre of Dreams if it hadn’t been for the whirlwind success Solskjaer endured during his period as interim boss.
Will Pochettino leave PSG?
Pochettino will be aware that anything but lifting the elusive Champions League trophy for the French giants means his job in the capital is at risk.
Having an all-star line-up, which possesses Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, gives the man who lost in the 2018 Champions League final with Tottenham, the best chance to go one better this year.
It’s highly unlikely that Pochettino is going to be prized away from the PSG project mid season.
Any decision on his future which would depend on the club’s progress in the Champions League isn’t likely to come anytime soon.
With seven points from their three Champions League group games, it looks guaranteed that PSG will progress to the last sixteen, which means Pochettino’s job is safe until the knockout stages resume in February/March.
Thomas Tuchel was fired from Paris Saint Germain after losing in the 2020 Champions League final against Bayern Munich.
But the German has since gone on to win the trophy and currently sits top of the Premier League with Chelsea after replacing club legend Frank Lampard.
Pochettino could have the same devastating impact at Manchester United, but with him unlikely to switch mid season, it could mean that he misses out on yet another window of opportunity to come to the Red Devils.
