Ratings from United’s game against Southampton.

De Gea – 7 – United’s best player. Two great saves to prevent a more embarrassing result.

Young – 5 – Lucky to not have been sent off, and will face retrospective action probably.

Lindelof – 6 – Decent. Showed good recovery and passing range.

Jones – 6 – Essentially anonymous, which for Phil Jones these days is a good thing.

Shaw – 5 – The endeavour is there and so is the quality yet translating that into a consistence performance in this erratic United team is almost an impossible ask. We hope that it is not the case but it feels like a horrible set of circumstances where fate is simply against Luke Shaw’s future at Old Trafford.

Matic – 6 – The job he does do is the undervalued dirty work, and only appreciated when he isn’t there. As always, he did that well, though there were one or two difficult moments.

Pogba – 5 – Like a Ferrari with no wheels. Some stunning passing but when United needed him to provide a heartbeat, he flatlined.

Lingard – 5 – Not his day.

Mata – 5 – Suited to away games, but in games like these, where United need penetration, the Spaniard can be ineffectual.

Mkhitaryan – 3 – A nadir.

Lukaku – (NR)

Subs – Rashford – 5 – Ineffectual

Martial – 5 – Was introduced far too late and didn’t get into the game.
