Bruno Fernandes’ imminent move to Manchester United [BBC] raises the bar at Old Trafford.

The move is bad news for United’s below par attacking midfield trio of Andreas Pereira, Jesse Lingard, and Juan Mata.

Between the three players the pair have scored four goals this season in all competitions. United require better.

What will be interesting is if whoever gets picked tonight will show a reaction?

Who will play?

It is unclear which of Pereira, Mata, or Lingard will get the start.

It’s a bit like being given the choice of three different sandwiches without any filling in them. None of them are particularly appetising.

But whoever does get the nod, will get an opportunity to show they can still be to Solskjaer’s taste

Fernandes is not coming in to sit on the bench, but this will be one last chance for the starter to state their case.

For too long, United’s attacking midfield options have been inept. Fernandes makes the team better.

Tonight, one player will have a chance to show some defiance.

With a place in the team, and even at the club possibly under threat in the summer, this is a great chance to step up.

Playing away at your local rivals, in a semi-final, and the chance to show their own individual importance and impress the manager.

What more motivation could a player need? The big question is whether any of Mata, Pereira and Lingard have the ability to make the difference required.

The course of the season suggests not, but in a one-off game, we can hope. Competition can sometimes bring out the best in players.
