Manchester United produced a stirring second half performance against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

A late goal denied victory, with an injury time equaliser from Ross Barkley salvaging a 2-2 draw for the hosts.

It was a bitter blow for United after fighting back from a 1-0 half-time deficit to lead 2-1.

Integral to the turnaround were Juan Mata and Anthony Martial, who scored twice.

Both players gave it their all in the second half and Martial looked crestfallen when he was substituted with minutes to go.

Martial and Mata key

Martial demonstrated his ice cool finishing with two well taken strikes reminiscent of his first season at the club.

With Romelu Lukaku blunt once again in front of goal, Martial’s killer edge was exactly what was required.

Mata provided the assist for Martial’s second goal, courtesy of an excellent run and well placed cross to the Frenchman.

He looked like a player possessed midway through the second half as he broke through the lines against his former club and took opponents on, and chasing down tackles.

Unlikely duo

Martial and Mata played an important role in United’s win over Newcastle a fortnight ago, both scoring goals in the 3-2 win.

The duo have both had difficulties with manager Jose Mourinho through their careers, with Mata’s beginning at Chelsea.

Neither Mata or Martial have played regularly despite commanding expensive transfer fees. The Spaniard last playing 90 minutes in back to back league games for United back in December.

Amid rumours of Mourinho potentially losing the dressing room, the pair have stepped up emphatically to produce their most clinical performances of 2018.

They must be given the chance by Mourinho to keep it up, and long may it continue.
