Manchester United have a rich history of centre-backs. They also get linked with practically every decent one on the planet.
Despite signing Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire in recent years, the rumours persist. This time, the Mirror claims United are interested in the £52.5million-rated Milan Skriniar.
There is surely no truth in the rumours. After all, United are well stocked at the back, with Axel Tuanzebe ready to make his mark alongside his more experienced teammates.
In fact, there is only one centre-back in world football that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should even consider.
If United were to sign another defender, it should be Kalidou Koulibaly. He would not come cheap, and his list of suitors is substantial, but he is surely the only centre-back Solskjaer would be swayed by.
United don’t have to buy anyone. Certainly not an over-priced Skriniar. There are far bigger decisions to be made further forward.
What United need now is another central midfielder, a winger and, if Odion Ighalo leaves, an additional forward.
What they don’t need is Skriniar or any other central defender aside from the best in the business.
