Manchester United have been linked with a move for Bayern Munich youngster Jamal Musiala.

Goal report United are taking an interest in the 17-year-old attacker, who left Chelsea to join Bayern two years ago.

What’s his situation?

Musiala has made 12 first team appearances for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga already and scored three goals. He is an attacking midfielder who plays centrally.

The point of uncertainty over his Bayern status is because he is on a youth contract, and he is looking for a deal close to £100,000 per week.

This is a hefty deal for a 17-year-old to land, but Musiala’s advisors reportedly believe his early progression to the first team mean he has earned the right to seek a top salary.

United are reportedly one of several English clubs tracking him along with Tottenham and Liverpool. Musiala was on Chelsea’s books previously before quitting to join Bayern.

What do they say about him?

Musiala’s approach has been praised by Bayern reserve coach Sebastian Hoeness. He told “The boy is ice cold. If you talk to him before the game, he appears focused, calm and reserved.”

Manager Hans Flick praised him after he scored in a 3-3 draw with RB Leipzig.

Flick was quoted by One Football: “[The game] changed when Jamal came in. He’s always making himself available and asking for the ball. What he’s showing for his 17 years of age is already very mature.”

England under-21 boss Aidy Boothroyd is excited to see how Musiala develops.

He told Sky Sports after his contribution to a win over Albania last October: “I thought Jamal was excellent. You can see that physically he’s not finished. He’s going to be a brute of a man. His brain and his feet are the most impressive, he’s razor-sharp. We’re really pleased with him to step up the way he has done.”

There is a bit of a tug-of-war on the international scene, with Germany hoping to persuade Musiala to pick them over England at senior level.

Is a move likely?

Bayern are such a well run club in terms of development and recruitment that it would be a major surprise if they were unable to hang onto Musiala.

His current deals expires in June 2022, so they are in a tricky situation with the young talent, as they risk losing him for nothing.

This month, a deal is very unlikely. Musiala could have a chance of forcing a move in the summer, if he wants to dig in.

You would imagine a compromise will be reached. He is getting game time at Bayern and he should be happy to have the opportunity he does.

But it makes a lot of sense for United to be interested. This is a potential Jadon Sancho situation where Musiala could be worth £60-70 million in 12-18 months time if he were to sign a new deal at Bayern.

If there is a chance United could acquire an asset like this for a cut-price fee this summer then it would be smart business to push for it. But Musiala will have to be difficult and push for a move at his end too.

Whether United are willing to pay £100,000 per week to Musiala is another matter. Angel Gomes was reportedly offered less than half this fee last summer before leaving.

Verdict: Keep an eye on this one but don’t get your hopes up. Bayern will probably hang onto him.
