Manchester United reportedly desperate and concerned over David de Gea
There is more concerning news for Manchester United coming from The Telegraph, this time over David de Gea.
De Gea’s current contract expires in June, although the club have an option to automatically extend this deal to 2020.
The club are said to be growing increasingly concerned and ‘desperate’ to get the Spaniard to sign a new contract. Real Madrid and Juventus are known admirers.
The paper claim De Gea has been offered a £275,000 per week contract extension. He is yet to commit.
Losing De Gea would be a significant blow for United with the Spaniard the club’s clear number one goalkeeper and regarded as the best in the world.
How do the wages stack up?
The offer of £275,000 a week is a substantial one which would increase De Gea’s current earnings.
Sportek report De Gea currently earns £200,00 per week, the same as Romelu Lukaku.
Only Paul Pogba (£290,000 p/w) and Alexis Sanchez (£350,000 p/w) earn more currently and it will remain that way.
Anthony Martial earns just £75,000 per week by comparison and money will have to be found, potentially from player sales, to fund these increases.
United currently have the biggest wage bill in the Premier League. Right now the squad is not providing value for money.
The club are in a tough spot with De Gea. They must do everything possible to keep him and pay what it takes, and look to make up the money elsewhere. Even if it means tough decisions like selling top earner Sanchez.
