Manchester United are looking to extend Bruno Fernandes’ contract, according to Fabrizio Romano.

A new deal for Fernandes is described as a ‘priority’ for United after signing Jadon Sancho.

Fernandes scored 28 goals last season to finish as the club’s highest goalscorer.

He also provided 18 assists, also the highest in the Red Devils’ squad.

Fernandes has been the outstanding performer ever since he signed for United and he has given absolutely everything, even captaining the club in Harry Maguire’s absence.

How much does Fernandes earn?

While he has been at the club just 18 months, it would be fair for United to offer Fernandes an improved deal reflecting his importance to the club.

The Mirror report Fernandes signed a deal worth around £100,000 per week when he joined United. They claimed during the season that United were looking to double this.

It’s reasonable considering his status in the squad, in light of Jadon Sancho’s arrival, with the young winger set to earn around £250,000 per week, The Athletic report.

Sancho may end up worth his wages, but there is no real reason Fernandes should be on substantially lower.

There should not be a rush

Romano says this is a ‘next priority’ for United, perhaps reflecting how urgent the club feel it is to compensate Fernandes properly.

But during the transfer window should this really be the club’s next order of business? Probably not.

Fernandes is under contract until 2026 and United can get this deal done once the transfer window closes on August 31.

Right now there are important deals to conduct, the signing of a defender and defensive midfielder.

Paul Pogba’s contract is also more of a priority to sort out, with the Frenchman’s deal set to expire in 2022.
