Five out of five. Manchester United’s perfect pre-season record continued last night.

It almost didn’t. Only a late goal from Juan Mata in injury time provided a 1-0 victory.

This was a worthwhile practice match with a few concerns notable.

Here are our five reactions from the game…

Jones is as close as ever

Here we are, one more game away from starting the season and Phil Jones is lining up in central defence with Victor Lindelöf.

This was not the scenario any of us had envisioned heading into the season.

Jones had his usual comical moment, attempting an overhead clearance and getting penalised for a handball.

If the squad stays like this, Jones has a fair chance of starting the season, and that’s not what anybody wants.

Scott McTominay shines

Pre-season needed to be about players seizing their chances and thankfully Scott McTominay has done exactly that.

He was impressive in a box to box role and is surefire lock to start the season.

The young Scot ended last season impressively and has carried this on.

Lingard, Matic, Fred reason to worry

Jesse Lingard has had every opportunity this pre-season to step up.

He has worked hard, but there has not been any evidence of the quality on the ball United need from a player in his position.

Nemanja Matic continues to look off the pace and out of place, while Fred is clearly not an instant fix.

He gave the ball away cheaply and looked to be trying too hard. It’s just not clicking for him yet.

Greenwood has a real starting chance

Greenwood came off the bench and came close to breaking the deadlock. He was our most lively attacker.

There really is not much to choose from between Greenwood, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford.

That says so much about the 17-year-old’s ability, and he has a genuine chance to start the season up front or on the wing against Chelsea.

More signings badly needed

All of the above highlights that United’s squad needs work.

We still lack quality creatively and a Bruno Fernandes type would solve this.

Defensively we have been solid, but a Harry Maguire would make so much difference.

New faces and a couple of outgoings at least, United need to get busy before the transfer window closes next week.
