Manchester United and Jadon Sancho is the transfer rumour that runs and runs. But plenty of news outlets got carried away following Borussia Dortmund executive Carsten Cramer’s recent comments.
As reported by the Metro, Cramer told the Leaders in Sports online forum that clubs may have to lower player price-tags in light of current circumstances.
‘I’m very sure the expectations of high fees will go down as well,’ he said.
That led to numerous reports claiming the Dortmund man had ‘hinted’ at a reduction in Sancho’s transfer fee.
The word ‘hint’ is thrown about when reporters want to create one story out of another. He didn’t ‘say’ something, he ‘hinted’ at it. That is another way of saying ‘we’re twisting his words to get United fans excited’.
The truth is, while the days of astronomical transfer fees may be over (for now), some players will still warrant huge sums. They are the elite. Just as Cristiano Ronaldo and Paul Pogba moved for big money in the past, so Sancho will in the future.
If anything, it is the players below the elite that will go for far less. Dortmund know exactly what they have in Sancho, and United know his signing would be akin to those of Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney before him.
The 20-year-old’s arrival would be a game-changer at Old Trafford. So, while Dortmund may not be able to hold United to ransom, it would still be a surprise if they sold for anything close to a ‘bargain’.
