Bruno Fernandes to United may be almost complete, but another new signing is needed too.

A striker has been needed all month, ever since last summer, and Anthony Martial’s performance last night confirmed it.

Martial has 12 goals this season, yet on his own without Marcus Rashford by his side, he is not able to lead the line with the effectiveness United need.

Against City last night he managed just one shot, which landed off target, and did not really pose a threat all night long.

To be fair to Martial, Rashford struggled on his own early in the season too, but this was supposed to be the season the Frenchman stepped up.

Martial was given the number nine shirt, and entrusted to prove he can be a central striker. Right now he is failing.

He has scored only two goals in seven games in 2020, and it would be fair to describe his strikes away at Tranmere in a 6-0 win and at home to Norwich in a 4-0 victory as pretty meaningless.

Inclination to drift

Martial was not getting service last night, and with Jesse Lingard behind him, he had to go looking for it.

This meant that the Frenchman was often outside the box, rather than in it. He touched the ball only 39 times in 90 minutes.

Martial just isn’t a target man, and with teams sitting deep against United to invite pressure, his style does not fit the lone striker role.

This leaves United having to head into the transfer market before the deadline, ideally, to find another option.

Martial can still be a success at United, but the striker role is a burden and opportunity which needs to be shared at the moment.

Fernandes will help United, and Martial, and so will a late addition if the club can manage it.

Martial is a popular player with the United fanbase, but he is testing patience right now.

Many feel he is out of his depth playing the central striker role and are losing faith…
