Down, but not out. The Telegraph report Manchester United are still in the race to sign Matthijs De Ligt despite missing out on the Champions League.
The paper claim De Ligt is open to becoming a leader at Old Trafford and is currently undecided on his next move.
The Ajax star is rated at £75 million and is also wanted by Barcelona, Liverpool, and Tottenham.
He will decide on his future after the UEFA Nations League, which holds its’ final on June 6.
United can make his decision easier
De Ligt is the dream signing for Manchester United, one that can transform the club’s summer.
He has proven his quality this season in the Champions League and would be terrific at the back alongside Victor Lindelöf. He is also younger, and potentially cheaper than Kalidou Koulibaly.
United now have an opportunity to show De Ligt their vision.
If Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and co can get two or three deals over the line before June 6, it will help De Ligt look at the club more favourably.
Striker, winger, central midfielder, right-back, are all positions United need to strengthen this summer in addition to centre-back.
If Solskjaer and his staff can fill a couple of them, it will demonstrate to De Ligt that the club means business.
United have a tough fight to win the race for De Ligt, but his open mind at this stage is a good sign.
There is no time to waste. United have to get to work on improving the squad immediately and show they are building a squad capable of challenging for silverware again.
