Scott McTominay set a new benchmark last week when he posted his latest five kilometre run time.
The Manchester United midfielder showed he had run just over 5k in almost 16 minutes flat.
It was a remarkable pace which The Times report would place McTominay among the seven fastest professional athletes in Britain this year.
His run has also caught the attention of his United teammates.
Luke Shaw was asked about it in a fan led Q&A with the club website and said he was stunned just how fast the young Scot’s time was.
Shaw said: “Scotty posted his 5km time on social media last week, which was a joke, something like 16 minutes. I don’t even know if it’s real. Harry did one today at 18 minutes, which is a really good time, but Scotty is a joke.
“He’s one of the fittest in the team and, if I’m not wrong, I think his dad was a runner. He must be giving him tips and training him up at the moment. It’s unbelievable how fast that time is. When I saw it, I put it into the treadmill to check the speed, and it was some ridiculous level, just a flat-out sprint, for 5km.
“Unbelievable. He’s a big, tall lad though, so maybe his big stride had something to do with it, but he’s a machine.”
Glad he stayed
McTominay has had a few things to say about his past year too this week.
He told the club’s podcast how he could have gone out on loan in January 2019, a time at when he had to drop down to under-23 football to catch Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s eye.
He said: “You hear loads of stories about boys going on loan, and different things like that, and I always had it in my head that I don’t want that. I want to be showing myself here first and, if it doesn’t work here, then you go somewhere else.”
McTominay fought his way back into the first team and then played a heroic part in United’s win over PSG.
He ended the season as one of the few United players in good form, which set him up as a key player at the start of this season.
While competition for places in midfield is more intense than ever right now, McTominay’s superior fitness gives him an edge over all of his rivals.
