If United do upgrade at left-back, Alex Telles should be the only option

Luke Shaw was missed in Manchester United’s FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea.

The 24-year-old was an important part of United’s 19-game winning run, and is developing a good understanding with Marcus Rashford on the left.

But when it comes to attacking impact, Shaw sits at just one assist and one goal in 33 matches, with none in the Premier League.

So while Shaw is an important player, there is a feeling that United could potentially find a more explosive player at the position, especially looking at Andrew Robertson’s 10-assist season in the same role for Liverpool, following on from 11 last season.

If United want a more dynamic attacking player at left-back, then the list should start and end with Porto left-back Alex Telles.

He would make United a different team

Telles has scored an impressive 13 goals from left-back this season for Porto, and provided nine assists.

In July alone he has two goals and three assists over his last four games. He is unstoppable right now.

Transfermarkt report Telles has 55 assists and 24 goals in four seasons since signing for Porto in 2016. That is such a strong contribution from a left-back.

Telles averages 1.8 key passes per game, in comparison to Shaw’s 0.8 in the Premier League for United this season.

A move for Telles would not necessarily mean ‘time up’ for Luke Shaw. But it would give United a totally different option in the position.

United could keep Shaw and put faith in Brandon Williams to develop, but if the Red Devils are serious about getting better immediately and challenging for a title next season, then a move for 27-year-old Telles this summer would provide the team with an immediate short-term boost.

What about the money?

United’s transfer business will revolve around Jadon Sancho this summer.

Any other moves will depend on how much money the Dortmund winger costs, and then how much United receive in player sales.

Telles though could be very affordable. He is now set to enter the final year of his Porto contract, which ends in July 2021.

PSG had been all set to sign Telles, but as reported by Le10Sport, this deal fell through due to the recent financial crisis.

O Jogo  had reported that PSG were willing to pay £23 million for the Brazilian, although Mais Futebol report Galatsaray will receive 10 per cent as a sell on fee.

At a fee of around £20-30 million, Telles is a bargain in terms of what he can offer United. The club could recoup this fee with sales of Alexis Sanchez and Chris Smalling, for instance.

Solskjaer is loyal to Luke Shaw and rates him highly, but he could look at it a very different way.

Telles could be a very good player for Shaw and Williams to learn from, due to the attacking nature of his game. If he comes in for two or three seasons, he could leave a lasting impact on both players.
