Gone are the days of Ryan Giggs, Andrei Kanchelskis and Cristiano Ronaldo bursting down the wings, with strikers converted to wide men more often than not.
Things could be about to change, though. After all, Tahith Chong is tipped for huge things at Old Trafford, while another target has no entered the rumour mill.
According to the Sun, United are interested in signing PSV Eindhoven’s Steven Bergwijn, and the 21-year-old is a perfect fit for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
Equally comfortable on either flank, Bergwijn has scored nine goals and provided seven assists in 16 league games this season.
He would offer United the pace and attacking threat Solskjaer treasures while giving them a throwback winger.
Chong is equally promising and, alongside Bergwijn, he could be half of United’s next great wide partnership.
The best sides under Sir Alex Ferguson ensured wingers were at the forefront and United appear to be going back to that mindset.
With Diogo Dalot and Luke Shaw able to offer support from full-back, bringing in Bergwijn and blooding Chong could see United return to their blistering best.
