Harry Maguire fears Manchester United were complacent

It is tough to pinpoint quite why Manchester United are struggling so much in the Premier League right now.

There is no getting away from it though, United are under performing.

A team capable of beating PSG and RB Leipzig in back to back Champions League games should be winning more than two out of six Premier League games to start the season.

And perhaps that is the problem. The Champions League games are too much of a distraction.

Club captain Harry Maguire admitted as much after the loss, voicing his concern that the players may have let the praise go to their heads.

Maguire said he feared there may have been some complacency creeping in.

He told the club’s official website: “I don’t think the concentration was there in the first half, in terms of the cleanness of the passing.

“Maybe we were a bit complacent [after the Leipzig win], everybody was patting us on the back.

“But you win and you lose, and you have got to stay level-headed, it is a long old season. I can’t put my finger on it.

We will analyse it this week. We have another big game on Wednesday [in Istanbul] and we have to move on quickly and we have to improve.”

Concern not complacency

United’s players have not got anything to be complacent about right now.

Crystal Palace (3) have scored more goals at Old Trafford in the Premier League than United have.

United sit a lowly 15th in the Premier League table, and while we have a game in hand on other teams, winning this would only take us to 12th.

Next weekend’s match away to Everton is a huge game, and there cannot be any complacency heading into that match.

The one piece of good news is Everton have lost a little steam after their own strong start, now losing two in a row.

Unfortunately they have a week to rest up while United fly to Turkey and back. Getting a result at Goodison Park certainly won’t be easy.
