Heading into the transfer window we had hoped United would show some forward planning and attempt to strike a deal to sign Jadon Sancho.

Not necessarily for him to sign instantly, but to agree a deal for Sancho to move in the summer, as Chelsea did with Christian Pulisic last January.

Sancho had an up and down first half of the season at Dortmund, while The Mail reported the German side acknowledged this could be his final season at the club.

Now he could have a new lease of life with the Bundesliga club, thanks to Erling Haaland.

Haaland had a dream debut for Dortmund at the weekend, scoring a 23-minute hat-trick. It was easy to see why United wanted him.

Amid Haaland’s show-stealing performance, Sancho’s impact was clear to see.

He scored one of the goals and also provided an assist, and the Sancho to Haaland link up already looks like is set to become one of European football’s most deadly combinations.

Wistfully we can wonder what could have been. Sancho assisting Haaland was a pipe dream we briefly had for United.

Makes United’s job tougher

This season Sancho has now scored 12 goals and has 12 assists. It’s easy to forget he is only 19.

Now he has prolific Haaland at the end of his passes and distracting defenders, Sancho’s numbers could further explode and reach new heights.

This makes United’s task to sign him even harder.

He will command more attention from other top clubs, and his price tag will stay close to the £100 million The Telegraph reported Dortmund wanted for him. He could cost even more.

What’s more, Sancho may end the season happier than ever, and might not want to move on.

Dortmund are seven points off the top of the Bundesliga, but could still win the league.

United have a tough time convincing Sancho to sign and Dortmund to sell. And that was before this past weekend.

Now it could be even harder. For the time being, Sancho is a dream signing, and that’s all he is.
