Honestly, we weren’t entirely convinced of the Eric Dier story; it felt a little bit like the Matic rumour, in that United had expressed an interest, but it was a bit of a smokescreen, because of the unlikelihood that their respective club would deal with us.
However we admit that when a respected newspaper like the Guardian reports that Dier has been our number one target and we are preparing a £50m offer, with Dier prepared to leave, it does make us think there may be something in it. In the story, that is, not the possibility of it happening. We still think Levy would rather burn his own flesh than sell a player to United, however, that ice may well have thawed. Considering how clever Tottenham’s transfer strategy has been, if we were to be successful here, we should also look to match them in a bid for Dier’s replacement!
Dier would feasibly be coming in, if he does, to play the Michael Carrick role; Carrick was named club captain yesterday, which is fitting considering his longevity, though we were more interested in who the vice captain might be, considering that player is likely to be the one who is skipper for most of the games. That news is yet to filter through.
The MEN have reported that United want to push through the Perisic deal imminently but their record with transfers this summer has not been particularly great.
The Daily Star report that United are offering a new deal for Ander Herrera, and the Sun suggest we will in fact offer a contract to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, while in outgoings, it is reported that Adnan Januzaj is going to Real Sociedad for a little under £10m.
