Fred was the surprise absentee from Manchester United’s pre-season tour, with the club citing family reasons.
The MEN report it is because Fred has booked this week for his wedding. He had earlier forecast to be off this week due to the Copa America.
Instead he was not even picked for Brazil, and his wedding is slap bang at the start of United’s pre-season tour.
It is a mix up which could prove detrimental to both Fred and United, although we hope not.
You have to wonder what Sir Alex Ferguson would have made of it had he been in charge.
As crystalised by his absence from Brazil’s squad, Fred’s first season at United was a disappointment.
He needs to kick on this summer and show why United spent £47 million on him a year ago.
Pre-season had a chance to be crucial to Fred’s chances of success. He missed the start of it last year after going to the World Cup with Brazil.
United’s travelling tour squad has been rightly criticised, highlighting a lack of depth in midfield.
With no signings made, there is a chance United get overrun in the Premier League by superior teams.
And with Paul Pogba agitating for a move, United really need Fred to step up.
Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needed Fred to go on tour and seize his chance.
Now he will join up later on, at a date yet to be announced.
The squad is so short-handed in terms of midfield quality that Fred’s absence could be felt.
It’s equally a missed opportunity for him to hit the ground running.
Lets just hope he can make up for lost time, because he, or United, really can’t afford to have many setbacks this season.
