Former Manchester United ace D'Mani Mellor joins Wycombe Wanderers

Former Manchester United academy star D’Mani Mellor has joined Wycombe Wanderers on a free transfer following his release from Old Trafford.

Mellor becomes Wanderers’ second new signing of the summer after the striker joined the League One side.

The 21-year-old had been with the Red Devils since the age of eight and made his solitary first-team appearance for the club in a Europa League group game against Kazakhstan side Astana in 2019.

Mellor’s appearance against Astana, which came under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, meant he had represented the Reds in every age group form under-9s to the first team.

He spent time on loan at League Two side Salford City last season, but after finding game time hard to come by, Mellor returned to United’s under-23 squad and captained the side on several occasions during the remainder of the season.

Having trained with the Adams Park side for a week towards the end of last season, Mellor impressed Gareth Ainsworth and has secured a full-time contract with the side who lost last season’s League One play-off final to Sunderland.

Mellor, who missed the entire of the 2020-21 campaign with a cruciate knee ligament injury, scored eight goals from 13 Premier League 2 appearances last season.

He finished his academy career for Manchester United with 23 goals and 11 assists from 65 games, averaging a goalscoring contribution in every other match.

After an underwhelming spell with Salford which brought just 20 minutes of action, Mellor will be hoping to establish himself as a regular in the Chairboys’ starting line-up.
