Paul Pogba has disappointed fans with comments discussing a future exit from Manchester United.
As so often is the case, Pogba’s words came while he was on international duty with France.
Pogba said he was happy at United, for now, while talking up Real Madrid. A lack of total commitment was clear.
After the backing from fans he has received in recent months for his excellent form, it’s a shame.
Pogba told BBC Sport: “It’s one of the biggest clubs in the world. I’ve always said Real Madrid is a dream club for every player.
“At the moment I’m happy in Manchester. I play. There’s a new coach.”
Perhaps Pogba’s comments were designed to put pressure on the board to appoint Ole Gunnar Solskjaer permanently. But that would be giving him an over generous benefit of the doubt.
Who will be captain next season?
Antonio Valencia will be released when his United contract expires in June.
Ashley Young has been filling in as captain, while Pogba stepped up against Wolves with the right-back suspended.
Young is only contracted for one more season, so United may look for a longer term skipper.
Ander Herrera is a player who embodies the United spirit more so than Pogba, although United are still to tie him down to a long term deal.
United may look to keep Pogba sweet by offering him the armband. But this could look weak.
Pogba’s comments are not befitting of a United captain.
If he wants the ultimate accolade, he needs to show more respect to the club and not even entertain the prospect of moving elsewhere.
