Manchester United have a busy summer ahead of them. But they have started as they will hope to go on with the signing of winger Dan James.
The 21-year-old shone down the left for Swansea City last season. And it will be interesting to see where he plays at Old Trafford.
There are suggestions that United have checked on James’ ability to play down the right. Yet much of his fine form came on the opposite flank.
That leaves United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a decision to make and James could be tasked with filling the role of his countryman and current national boss Ryan Giggs.
If James does ultimately make the left wing role his own, he could form a formidable partnership with £27million man Luke Shaw (BBC).
The left-back has to do the heavy lifting when playing behind Anthony Martial or Alexis Sanchez. But James is far better at tracking back and could offer the left-sided partner Shaw craves.
In fact, the new United signing’s work ethic is surely one of the reasons they were willing to buy him. He has pace to burn and uses it effectively at both ends of the pitch.
Shaw was one of United’s few bright sparks in the last campaign. But he could be about to get a helping hand on the left side, giving the team a much-needed boost in the process.
